The goal of green architecture is to minimize damage to the environment during the construction process and throughout the life of the building. Green design options include:
- Minimize the impact on the site by retaining existing structures, minimizing excavation, or using native landscaping.
- Use materials with longer lifespans, fewer harmful chemicals, or can be recycled.
- Harness natural resources such as natural light, solar panels, or water recycling and reuse.
- Install newer and more efficient mechanical equipment to save energy and maintenance costs.
Segalla Architects can also help you earn recognition for your environmentally-sensitive building by designing toward LEED certification. LEED guidelines award points for every environmentally-friendly design choice, such as using recyclable building materials, installing efficient energy systems or planting native plants. Through a complex and detailed matrix, LEED certification is awarded, ranging from LEED Certified to LEED Platinum.
In addition to creating a healthier environment, LEED certification can also provide tax breaks and earn government subsidies. The benefits differ by region and we will be happy to assist you finding the best options in your area.
